How to Set Up Automatic Security Updates
Security updates patch vulnerabilities that hackers exploit. Enabling automatic updates ensures you're protected as soon as fixes are available.
Overview
Most cyberattacks exploit known vulnerabilities that already have patches available. Automatic updates close these gaps before attackers can use them.
Step 1: Windows Automatic Updates
Keep Windows and Microsoft apps up to date.
Configure Windows Update
- Open Settings → Windows Update
- Click 'Check for updates' to install any pending updates
- Enable 'Get the latest updates as soon as they're available'
- Under 'Advanced options', enable 'Receive updates for other Microsoft products'
Set Active Hours
- Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Active hours
- Set your working hours so updates don't restart during use
- Windows will install updates and restart outside these hours
- Or choose 'Automatically' to let Windows learn your schedule
Update Installed Applications
- Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates
- Enable auto-updates: Store → Profile → App settings → App updates ON
- For non-Store apps, enable update checks within each application
- Consider Ninite.com for batch-updating common applications
Third-party applications (browsers, PDF readers, Java) are often targeted by attackers. Keep these updated alongside Windows.
Step 2: Mac Automatic Updates
Keep macOS and apps updated.
Enable macOS Auto Updates
- System Settings → General → Software Update
- Click the (i) info icon next to 'Automatic updates'
- Enable all options: Check for updates, Download, Install macOS updates, Install app updates, Install Security Responses
- Mac will download and install updates automatically
Update App Store Applications
- System Settings → App Store
- Enable 'Automatic Updates'
- Enable 'Install Security Responses and system files'
- Open App Store → Updates to check for pending updates
Step 3: Mobile Device Updates
Keep your phone and tablet current.
iPhone/iPad Auto Updates
- Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates
- Enable 'Download iOS Updates'
- Enable 'Install iOS Updates'
- Enable 'Security Responses & System Files'
- Device will update overnight while charging and on Wi-Fi
Android Auto Updates
- Settings → System → System update (varies by manufacturer)
- Enable automatic system updates if available
- For app updates: Google Play Store → Profile → Settings → Network preferences
- Set 'Auto-update apps' to 'Over Wi-Fi only'
- Enable 'Auto-update' in manufacturer's app store too
Update Best Practices
- Keep devices charged above 50% before updates
- Ensure sufficient storage space (at least 2-3GB free)
- Back up important data before major OS updates
- Don't delay security updates — install within 48 hours
- Restart devices weekly to apply pending updates
