How to Upgrade Operating Systems Safely

Major OS upgrades bring new features and security improvements but can occasionally cause compatibility issues. Proper preparation ensures a smooth upgrade.

Overview

OS upgrades differ from regular updates. They introduce significant changes that may affect software compatibility and system requirements. Always prepare before upgrading.

Step 1: Pre-Upgrade Preparation

Essential steps before starting the upgrade.

1

Check System Requirements

  • Visit Microsoft or Apple's website for minimum requirements
  • Windows 11: TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage minimum
  • macOS: Check Apple's list of supported Mac models
  • Use PC Health Check (Windows) to verify compatibility
  • Ensure at least 30GB of free storage for the upgrade
2

Check Software Compatibility

  • Make a list of critical software you use daily
  • Check each vendor's website for compatibility with the new OS
  • Pay special attention to antivirus, VPN, and driver software
  • Older printers and scanners may not have updated drivers
  • Check that your specific hardware (printers, scanners, etc.) is supported
3

Create Full Backup

  • Back up all data to an external drive
  • Create a system image backup (full restore capability)
  • Windows: Control Panel → Backup and Restore → Create system image
  • Mac: Ensure Time Machine has a current backup
  • Save a list of installed applications and licence keys
  • Back up browser bookmarks and saved passwords
Warning:

Do NOT upgrade without a backup. While rare, upgrades can fail and potentially result in data loss. A backup lets you roll back to exactly where you were.

Step 2: Performing the Upgrade

Run the upgrade under the right conditions.

1

Prepare for the Upgrade

  • Plug in your laptop — never upgrade on battery
  • Connect to reliable Wi-Fi or use ethernet
  • Close all running applications
  • Disable antivirus temporarily (it can interfere with upgrades)
  • Plan for 1-3 hours of downtime
2

Start the Upgrade

  • Windows: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates
  • Or use the Windows Installation Assistant from Microsoft's website
  • Mac: System Settings → General → Software Update
  • Click 'Upgrade Now' or 'Download and Install'
  • The computer will restart several times — this is normal
  • Do not turn off the computer during the upgrade

Step 3: Post-Upgrade Steps

Verify everything works after upgrading.

1

Verify and Update

  • Check that all your files and applications are present
  • Run Windows Update again to get latest patches
  • Update graphics drivers from manufacturer's website
  • Test printers, scanners, and other peripherals
  • Open each critical application and verify it works
  • Check that your antivirus is running and updated
2

Troubleshoot Issues

  • If a program doesn't work, check for an updated version
  • Right-click problem apps → Properties → Compatibility tab
  • Try 'Run as previous Windows version' compatibility mode
  • Reinstall problematic drivers from manufacturer's website
  • Windows: You can roll back within 10 days (Settings → System → Recovery)
  • Mac: Restore from Time Machine if critical software is incompatible
