How to Clean Laptop Fans and Vents

Dust buildup in laptop fans and vents causes overheating, loud fan noise, and reduced performance. Regular cleaning keeps your laptop running cool and quiet.

Overview

Laptops draw in air to cool internal components. Over time, dust accumulates on fans and heat sinks, blocking airflow and causing the CPU to throttle performance.

Step 1: External Cleaning (No Disassembly)

Quick cleaning without opening the laptop.

1

Gather Supplies

  • Can of compressed air (available from any computer shop, about £5)
  • Soft microfibre cloth
  • Wooden toothpick or soft brush
  • Clean, well-lit workspace
  • Anti-static wrist strap (optional but recommended)
2

Clean the Vents

  • Shut down the laptop completely (not sleep mode)
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery if removable
  • Locate the air intake vents (usually on the bottom) and exhaust vents (usually on the side or back)
  • Hold the compressed air can upright, 2-3 inches from vents
  • Use short bursts — never continuous spray
  • Spray into the exhaust vent to push dust out through the intake
  • Use toothpick to gently remove visible dust clumps from vent grilles
Warning:

When using compressed air, hold the fan blades still with a toothpick. Spinning fans at high speed with compressed air can damage the bearings.

Step 2: Deep Cleaning (Opening the Laptop)

For thorough cleaning when external methods aren't enough.

1

Check Warranty and Prepare

  • Check if opening your laptop voids the warranty
  • Search YouTube for '[your laptop model] disassembly' for specific instructions
  • Prepare a clean, well-lit workspace
  • Use a magnetic parts tray or egg carton to organise screws
  • Take photos at each step so you can reassemble correctly
2

Remove the Bottom Panel

  • Remove all screws from the bottom of the laptop
  • Some screws may be hidden under rubber feet or stickers
  • Use a plastic pry tool to carefully separate the panel
  • Never force it — there may be hidden clips or screws
  • Gently lift the panel away from the laptop body
3

Clean the Fan and Heatsink

  • Locate the cooling fan(s) and copper heatsink
  • Hold the fan blade with a finger or toothpick while cleaning
  • Use compressed air in short bursts to blow out dust
  • Use a soft brush to clean dust from the fan blades
  • Clean dust from the heatsink fins
  • Wipe the fan housing with a dry microfibre cloth
  • Check for dust bunnies in corners and around components
4

Reassemble and Test

  • Carefully replace the bottom panel
  • Ensure all clips snap back into place
  • Replace all screws in their original positions
  • Power on and check that the fan operates normally
  • Monitor temperatures using HWMonitor or Core Temp
  • You should notice quieter fans and lower temperatures

Step 3: Preventing Dust Buildup

Reduce how often you need to clean.

1

Good Laptop Habits

  • Use a laptop stand to improve airflow under the device
  • Never use a laptop on bed, carpet, or fabric surfaces
  • Keep the area around your laptop clean and dust-free
  • Use a laptop cooling pad for intensive work
  • Clean external vents with compressed air monthly
  • Deep clean every 6-12 months depending on environment
