How to Secure Your Online Banking Sessions
Online banking is convenient but requires careful security practices. A compromised banking session can lead to financial loss and identity theft.
Overview
Online banking fraud costs UK consumers millions annually. Most attacks exploit weak passwords, unsecured networks, or social engineering rather than breaking bank encryption.
Step 1: Secure Access
How you connect to your bank matters.
Use Secure Connections Only
- Only access banking on your home Wi-Fi or mobile data
- Never use public Wi-Fi for banking — even with VPN
- Ensure your home Wi-Fi uses WPA3 or WPA2 encryption
- Consider using your bank's mobile app instead of browser
- Mobile apps have built-in security that browsers lack
Strong Authentication
- Use a unique, complex password for banking (16+ characters)
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) — mandatory for UK banks
- Use biometric login (fingerprint/face) on mobile banking apps
- Never share one-time passcodes with anyone, including 'bank staff'
- Your bank will NEVER ask for your full password or PIN
Bookmark Your Bank
- Type your bank's URL directly or use a bookmark
- Never click banking links in emails or text messages
- Verify the URL shows your bank's correct domain
- Check for the padlock icon and HTTPS
- Log out completely when finished — don't just close the tab
Banks will never send you a link asking you to verify your account. If you receive one, it's a phishing attempt. Contact your bank directly using the number on your card.
Step 2: Device Security
Keep the devices you use for banking locked down.
Keep Devices Updated
- Install OS updates immediately when available
- Keep your browser updated to the latest version
- Update your banking app when new versions release
- Enable automatic updates on all devices
- Don't use banking on jailbroken or rooted devices
Secure Your Device
- Use a screen lock (biometric preferred)
- Enable device encryption (BitLocker on Windows, FileVault on Mac)
- Install reputable antivirus software
- Don't install apps from unknown sources
- Regularly scan for malware
Step 3: Monitor Your Accounts
Catch fraud early by monitoring activity.
Set Up Alerts
- Enable transaction notifications via your banking app
- Set alerts for transactions above a threshold you choose
- Enable login notifications for new device access
- Set up balance alerts for low balance warnings
- Review all notifications promptly
Regular Account Reviews
- Check transactions at least weekly
- Review direct debits and standing orders monthly
- Look for small unfamiliar transactions — fraudsters test with small amounts
- Report anything suspicious to your bank immediately
- Keep bank's fraud hotline number saved in your phone
What to Do If Compromised
- Call your bank's fraud team immediately (number on back of card)
- Lock your card via the banking app if available
- Change your banking password from a secure device
- Report to Action Fraud (actionfraud.police.uk)
- Monitor statements closely for the following 3 months
