Phish or Legit: can you spot a scam?
Scam emails and texts are getting harder to spot. This free game shows you 15 real-world style messages. Decide whether each one is a scam or genuine, then see exactly what gave it away.
How to play
- Tap Scam or Legit, or swipe the message left or right. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys.
- You have 12 seconds for each message. Faster correct answers score more, and streaks earn a bonus.
- After every answer you’ll see the warning signs, so you learn as you play.
Warning signs to look for
- The real web address. Look at the part just before the first slash. brightwell-bank.secure-alerts.co belongs to secure-alerts.co, not the bank.
- Lookalike spelling. A zero instead of an “o”, or an extra word in the address.
- Pressure. Deadlines, fines, locked accounts and “act now” messages are there to rush you.
- Requests for money, card details, passwords or codes. Especially gift cards or a “new” bank account.
- Too good to be true. Prizes you never entered for and guaranteed investment returns.
